We’ve been planning our dream weddings since we were five years old. So it’s no surprise that we can’t get enough of a wedding inspiration and e-commerce site that lets you search through pics of swoon-worthy gowns, bouquets, and everything else you need for the big day. Most brides who have their wedding hair and makeup professionally done opt to do a test run before the big day. This is a great idea; it ensures that you and your makeup artist are on the same page beforehand, so you don’t end up looking like an ’80s beauty queen for, say, your boho wedding. Here are our tips for getting the most out of your test-run session.1. Bring pictures of what you like. This is obvious, but it’s incredibly helpful to see everything you like in one place so you can pinpoint the similarities between the looks that you’d like to replicate. Is it the glowing skin? The strong eyebrows? The shades of shadow? If possible, try to include photos of women who look somewhat similar to you. It’s much harder for both you and your makeup artist to envision how you want the makeup on your bronzed skin to look if you’ve only brought pictures of fair-skinned beauties.2. Bring pictures of what you don’t like. You don’t need a huge “what I hate” inspiration board, but pointing out a few things you want to avoid with your look can be very helpful for the makeup artist.3. Be open-minded. While it’s great to have an idea of what you want, it also helps to go in with an open mind. Determine your non-negotiables ahead of time—you will not wear dark lipstick or black eyeliner, for example—so you can remain open to other suggestions, like trying airbrushed makeup or having your eyebrows filled in.4. Speak up and be specific. If you hate it, say something! Pretending you love it isn’t fair to you or the makeup artist, who likely wants to please you. And try to focus in on what it is you don’t like.5. Take your new look out and about. After your appointment, get out so you can observe the makeup in different settings—in dim lighting, with your veil on, sitting in the sun for lunch. And take pictures! This will help you get a sense of how the makeup will hold up and how it will actually look on the big day.
And take before and after pictures!
